Storm season is just around the corner and it is never too early to make sure you and your family and property are storm ready. Wild weather is par for the course during storm season in Brisbane. This typically runs from late October to March but can often arrive much earlier. Dramatic and unpredictable, severe storms may cause you a pile of repair bills if they strike without warning. To be on the safe side, it’s a good idea to prepare your home for the worst case scenario.

There are a few things you can do around your home to get prepared.

– Trim trees and bushes and clear your garden of debris. This includes cutting back and trimming vegetation from fences so they don’t collapse in strong winds. Overhanging branches are a hazard in storms and need to be topped or pruned back to avoid damaging your property and neighbouring powerlines

– Check and clean your roof, gutters and downpipes, so water can flow easily through downpipes. Fix any loose tiles or iron sheeting.

– Identify loose objects in your yard which need to be secured or put away. Outdoor items such as furniture, pool accessories, children’s toys and pot plants can turn into flying missiles during storms that can inflict all kinds of damage to properties and people. Secure items tightly or store them inside the house if at all possible.

– Ensure you have an emergency plan and an emergency kit, usually with 3 days worth of supplies.

An emergency kit should include, but not limited to, a torch, battery operated radio, spare batteries, first aid kit, medication, non-perishable food (such as cans) and water.

A mobile phone is handy to have, to receive storm and flood and fire warnings, check the latest weather and radar images, and keep in touch with family and friends. To help your phone battery last longer during power outages, turn off any unnecessary apps, reduce the screen brightness, and charge up using your car, laptop or power bank.

An emergency plan should include arrangements for your pets or livestock, meeting places in case you get separated or need to evacuate, important documents, contact numbers and medical information.

Local councils usually have an early warning alert service for storms and fires, which you can sign up for, to receive this information.

Storms can be a busy time for the SES, so remember to only call the SES in emergency situations on 132 500. Always contact 000 in life threatening situations.
